Letter to my 18-Year-Old Self đ
Dear Aderimike,
I remember your 18th birthday so vividly. You were in your second year of undergrad, brimming with excitement about this monumental age while starting to question whether you were making the right choices and on the right path. Let me tell you: you are right where you need to be. Youâve done so well. You didnât follow the crowdâyou followed your dreams and interests, and Iâm super proud of you!
Here are a few things youâll soon learn:
Failure is not the end of the world.
You had your first major failure when your chemistry result wasnât great, but trust me, thereâll be more failures, even after youâve put in so much hard work. But hereâs the thing: theyâll shape you. Remember this quote from your fave, Serena Williams: âA champion is not defined by their wins but by how they recover when they fail.â Thatâs the mindset youâll need to keep moving forward.
Live a little!
I wish youâd let yourself enjoy life more. I know youâre so focused on getting the best grades (which is great), but thereâs so much more to life than perfect grades. Try new things, experiment with hobbies, and allow yourself to have fun! You deserve to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
Change is constant.
Oh, girl, youâre going to change so much that youâd hardly recognize the present you. But thatâs the beauty of it. Embrace the changeâitâs taking you somewhere amazing.
Itâs your parentsâ first rodeo at life too.
Theyâve done such a great job raising you, even when they didnât have all the answers. Give them graceâtheyâre learning too.
Nobody is coming to save you.
So make the best decisions with whatever situation you find yourself in. And if you make bad choices? Thatâs okayâyouâll bear the consequences, learn from them, and keep moving forward.
God is goodâalways.
Even when the challenges feel overwhelming, Heâs got you. Hold on to your faith, because itâll sustain you through it all.
True friendship is beautiful.
Stop trying to be everyoneâs friend. I know you love meeting new people, but be intentional about your friendships. Quality over quantity, always.
Your belief in God, your curiosity, your bravery, and your strong sense of self will open doors you canât even imagine right now. Youâll surprise yourself with how strong and determined you are. Youâll make mistakes, but every time, youâll bounce back stronger.
So, hold your head high, laugh often, and donât take life too seriously. Youâre going to do incredible thingsâjust wait and see.
With love from your older self đ
P.S. Can you believe you moved to Canada and now youâre a content creator? Like, your face is on the internet, yapping about money! Who wouldâve thought, girl?
If you could say one thing to your 18-year-old self, what would it be?
